From a Poolside Conversation to a Completed Manuscript

Helping one author preserve a story of resilience, healing, faith, and legacy

One author carried a remarkable life story one shaped by hardship and healing, unexpected turns, deep faith, and experiences she understood as the miraculous work of God. As I sat beside the pool listening to her journey, I remarked that her story needed to be shared. When I asked whether she had ever considered writing her memoir, she said she had encountered several roadblocks and needed help. She wanted to preserve her story for her family and future generations while also offering encouragement and hope to others, but she was unsure how to proceed.

Having a story to tell and knowing how to shape it into a book are two different things.

There were memories, written reflections, God-given dreams, and years of meaningful experiences to sort through. What was needed was someone who could recognize the threads connecting them, ask questions that would uncover important details, and help shape the story into a manuscript readers could follow.

A life especially one shaped by unexpected medical challenges, addiction, and loss does not unfold in neat chapters.

This story included many seasons, relationships, transitions, and spiritual experiences. Some memories had already been written, while others emerged through conversation. The challenge was to bring these pieces together without losing the honesty, personality, and faith that made the story unique.

The author needed more than traditional editing. This project called for a flexible, relational process that would provide support throughout the writing journey without taking ownership of the story away from the author or the family members whose experiences were part of it.

The Writing Companion Process

We began by identifying the larger movements of the author’s life and the themes that appeared throughout her story: resilience, healing, faith, transformation, and legacy.

From there, I developed sections and thoughtful questions to guide our conversations. During regular Zoom sessions, the author shared memories and experiences in her own words. Some material arrived in written form and needed editing and development. At other points, recorded conversations became the source material from which new sections were shaped.

The process unfolded through a steady, collaborative rhythm:

Manuscript review is paced throughout our 16 weeks together according to the needs and stage of your project, allowing the writing process to develop naturally rather than requiring you to produce a set number of pages each week.

Before We Begin

Throughout the process, the author retained ownership, creative control, and final approval. My role was to listen closely, notice what connected, and help give form to the story she already carried.

One of the most meaningful parts of this project was discovering that the book was about more than a sequence of events. Beneath the individual memories was a larger story of encountering God through suffering, joy, family, ministry, and change. As the author shared her story and included her family in the process, we witnessed a measure of healing and renewal as they named what they had experienced.

As the manuscript developed, experiences that initially seemed separate began to illuminate one another. Repeated themes became more visible. Transitions grew clearer. Personal reflections helped readers understand not only what happened, but also how those experiences shaped the author’s faith and life.

This is one of the gifts of writing companionship: an attentive listener can sometimes recognize the thread running through stories that have felt disconnected to the person who lived them.

The Outcome

Through a structured, collaborative writing process, spoken stories, written reflections, and personal memories became a completed, formatted manuscript prepared for publication.

The finished book preserves the author’s history and voice while creating a lasting testimony for her family, community, and future readers. What began as a collection of memories, dreams, and medical facts became a cohesive story one that invites readers to journey through pain and healing, struggle and joy, and an enduring life of faith.

The experience also helped shape the vision for BirchWave Writing Companion services. It confirmed my belief that people do not need to become professional writers to preserve a meaningful story. Sometimes they need a trusted companion who will listen, ask thoughtful questions, recognize the deeper themes, and help carry the process from conversation to completion.

This experience drew together the skills I developed through years of pastoral care and spiritual direction and transformed them into a service that can have ripple effects for generations.

“Jenna Stepp was incredibly helpful as I wrote my book. I came into the process unsure of where to start, but I quickly gained confidence in my ability to move forward with her at my side. She created a timeline that worked for me and helped me stay on task.

“As the book progressed, Jenna asked questions that filled in important details and often sparked memories that were critical to my memoir. She was careful to provide help when needed while allowing me to express myself fully. Her ability to organize my thoughts and keep me moving forward was crucial to the book’s completion. I highly recommend her services to anyone whether a novice or an experienced writer who is navigating the writing and publishing process.”

Jenna’s Reflection

“Working on this manuscript reminded me that writing a life story is an act of both courage and trust. I was entrusted with memories that were tender, joyful, painful, and deeply sacred. As a pastor and spiritual director, I noticed quickly that sitting with the author and her family through our interviews was a sacred experience. Helping them find the words to share their story was a privilege. My responsibility was to identify the thread connecting these experiences and give the story a shape that others could receive.

“Watching a lifetime of memories become a completed manuscript was profoundly meaningful. The story remained entirely the author’s own, but she no longer had to carry the process of telling it alone.”
